Two of the UK's best free to enter pumpkin patches are in Sussex.

Families looking for a low-cost autumn day out can visit two Sussex pumpkin patches that have been named among the best free-to-enter sites in the country.

New research by outdoor toy retailer OutdoorToys analysed pumpkin patches across the nation and identified five venues where both adults and children can visit without paying an admission fee.

South Farm in Rodmell, near Lewes, and Sompting Pumpkins, near Lancing, both made the national list.

The study found that the two Sussex attractions were among just five pumpkin patches nationwide offering completely free entry for visitors, alongside destinations in Lincolnshire, Angus and Devon.

Researchers said free-entry pumpkin patches can provide a more affordable option for families during the October half-term and Halloween season, allowing visitors to enjoy pumpkin picking without the added cost of admission tickets.

While the Sussex venues featured prominently in the ranking, nearby Tulleys Farm in West Sussex was highlighted for its huge popularity online.

The attraction was named the UK's most Instagrammed pumpkin patch, with 32,500 Instagram posts, and was also found to be the country's most searched-for pumpkin patch, attracting around 1.1 million annual searches.

OutdoorToys also reported that Doddington Hall in Lincolnshire retained the top overall spot in its pumpkin patch rankings for a fourth consecutive year, achieving a score of 9.41 out of 10.

Alex McMullan, product designer at OutdoorToys, encouraged families to check exactly what is included before booking.

He said: "Before you book, check what the ticket includes and whether pumpkins, parking or activities cost extra.

"Look at the route from the car park, toilets, accessibility and dog policy too, especially if you're taking a buggy.

"Popular October weekends can sell out, so secure your date early."

The study advised visitors to prepare for muddy and uneven conditions by bringing wellies or sturdy footwear.

It also recommended checking venues' social media channels before travelling in case weather affects arrangements.

For Sussex families planning an autumn outing, the inclusion of both Rodmell's South Farm and Sompting Pumpkins among the UK's best free-entry pumpkin patches could provide a seasonal day out without the cost of admission.
