Scores of campaigners are planning to descend on the High Court when a judicial review into the Newhaven incinerator begins.

A coach has been organised to take residents to the London courtroom where the legal challenge against the controversial facility is being heard on Monday.

Campaigners armed with placards and banners will board the 50-seat coach to London, with others expected to travel by car and train.

They will protest outside the court and then pack the public gallery as the hearing takes place.

The incinerator, designed to turn rubbish into electricity, was granted planning permission by East Sussex County Council, despite the council receiving more than 15,000 letters of objection.

The Argus revealed this week that the High Court had granted a hearing for a judicial review of the planning process.

The case, brought by Lewes District Friends of the Earth, argues the planning committee which considered the incinerator ignored long term regional recycling targets.

A judge will rule on the case during the two-day hearing.

County councillor Jon Freeman, who organised the coach, said: "We want as many people as possible to come along to the High Court because we need to make our presence felt.

"There is such strength of feeling over this incinerator and we need to make sure the court can see that.
