What is it you do?
I run Green Mop, an eco-friendly cleaning company for both domestic and commercial customers.

Why did you pick that?
When I decided to start a cleaning company, I was using green cleaning products at home, so I didn’t think of doing it any other way.

What makes you greener than other organisations?
Other cleaning companies offer eco-friendly cleaning as an option, but we only ever use non-toxic products.

We always take our green cleaning products with us so we never have to compromise and we get around on scooters, bikes, on foot and by buses.

And we also insist our regular customers have the big things such as vacuums and mops so we can carry all we need in a rucksack.

What is your latest green obsession?
The same obsession I’ve had since Green Mop started – that people should realise the chemicals we use in our cleaning products not only go into waterways and pollute the environment, they also pollute your home or workplace.

We should stop using bleaches, air-fresheners and antibacterials in everyday use.

How hard is it to be truly green in Sussex?
There’s nearly always a greener choice we could make. In the city of Brighton and Hove it’s a lot easier than in the villages of Sussex. The city has great public transport, for example.

What do you think of carbon-offsetting?
It would obviously be better to change lifestyles. But that isn’t always realistic, so carbon offsetting is a useful compromise.

What’s your guiltiest green secret?
Holidays in the sun!

What is the biggest thing you have sacrificed to be green?
My car. I get around on a scooter nowadays. It’s so much easier than having a car. And cheaper – free parking, a fiver to fill the tank, cheaper insurance and tax. Scootering along the seafront when it’s windy and rainy is not much fun though.

Are you a climate worrier or are you more optimistic?
I’m definitely a worrier. For us in Britain, we are all becoming more aware we can make a difference by simply changing our habits. I think individuals are really making changes and making a difference. But at a global, political level, I fear the will is not yet there.

What is your skill for when the oil runs out?
I can start a fire with two sticks and a pile of leaves... Well actually I can’t, but I intend to learn.

In a nutshell, what’s your philosophy on living a greener life?
Do the simple things, they add up to a lot.
