This was without a shadow of doubt the most poorly attended gig I've seen at Concorde 2.

It seems that being very current and making endless appearances in NME has landed Dev Hynes there without the real popularity to fill the place.

To make matters worse, those who did turn up didn't seem to care. The audience appeared supremely indifferent through most of the set - and with nothing very exciting or arresting about the performance, it was a bit of a trial from the start.

Musically the band were perfectly good - Hynes is a very talented guitarist, which he demonstrated sporadically, and some of the songs were impressively dynamic, jumping from soft indie pop to melodramatic, anthemic chorus passages, with folk, Americana, improv jamming and the Star Wars theme all mixed in.

It doesn't really add up though. LC seems very unsure of himself and this is reflected in the music, which doesn't quite know what it is.

However bad Hynes' former band Test Icicles were - and they were rubbish - they were at least different. This is passable but largely boring saccharine pop for those who were forced to stop watching Top of the Pops and discover NME too young.
