The expansion of a supermarket has created 175 jobs in Horsham.

The town’s Tesco Extra store has been extended to make room for hundreds of new product ranges.

News of the extra jobs comes after a succession of firms cut posts across Sussex.

Earlier this month, Glaxo- SmithKline announced it was to lay off 500 members of staff at its manufacturing site in Crawley.

Building materials group Kingspan is making 90 people redundant and is closing its operations in Lancing and Crowborough, while law firms Mayo Wynne Baxter and ASB solicitors, which has offices in Horsham and Brighton, have cut more than 50 jobs.

The extended Tesco store will be opened on September 1 at 10am.

Customers are being asked to nominate a charity to cut the ceremonial ribbon at the opening. The charity would also receive a £1,000 donation from the company.

A mezzanine level has been constructed inside the supermarket in Wickhurst Lane, Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, extending the floor space to 72,000sqft.

The development was carried out to allow the supermarket to stock ranges such as clothing, electrical goods and beauty products.

The extra space also means the store will now stock more experimental produce, including Polish and Caribbean food items.

Tesco says the recruitment process, which began two months ago, has been welcomed by young people in the area.

The Argus revealed this week that the number of people in the county claiming jobseeker’s allowance has risen. Crawley, Worthing and areas of Portslade and Southwick have been the hardest hit, with the number rising by up to 0.4%.
