Campaigners fighting against the Poohaven sewage works have vowed to block a busy coast road in protest.

A convoy of slow-moving vehicles will cause gridlock on the already traffic-choked A259 by driving between Peacehaven and Hove Town Hall.

The move is the latest attempt to derail controversial plans for the £300 million treatment works in Peacehaven, which was approved by East Sussex County Council earlier this month.

About 600 residents gathered at the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven to discuss the next stage of the fight.

John Hodgson, from the group Peacehaven Residents Opposed to Urban Development, said the main hope would be for Hazel Blears, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to call in the decision and then reject it.

Councillor John Livings, vicechairman of the council, said: “One of the options discussed was to hold a traffic crawl along the A259.

“We have two dates in mind and will consult Sussex Police before deciding on one. People are more angry now than they have ever been. This plant should be built at Shoreham, not on greenfield land in Peacehaven. We are not going to give up.”

At the meeting, Peacehaven mayor Ian Buchanan pledged £100 from the mayor’s fund towards the fighting fund.

The next protest meeting will be at the Meridian Centre on Wednesday, September 17 at 7.30pm.
