A driver was airlifted to hospital after an accident during a 'Destruction Derby' banger race.

The man suffered back and neck injuries and had to be cut free by firefighters after the accident at the Oval race track, in Angmering, near Worthing.

He was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where his injuries were not said to be life threatening.

Paramedics, police, and firefighters from Worthing and East Preston stations were called to the race track at about 4.50pm.

There were no other injuries.

The Oval race club is a quarter of a mile long banked track and hosts races for all types of cars.

Destruction Derby events see banger cars and even caravans crashing into each other during a race.
