A 63-year-old man is in hospital after being rescued from his burning flat.
Fire crews from Storrington, West Sussex, received a call from the man's neighbours in Meadowside at 9.13am today.
Six firefighters entered the blazing first-floor property and rescued him.
He has been taken to hospital but his condition is not yet known.
The fire service said his smoke alarm was not working, leading to a delay in their response.
A spokesman said: "Fire crews are currently active in the area giving advice and fitting smoke alarms where required.
"We strongly recommend members of the public check their smoke detectors and take advantage of the free home fire safety check service by calling 0800 328 6487."
