The pairing of Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys and American producer Boom Bip is one of the less predictable collaborations of recent times.

Factor in third member Cate le Bon and an unhealthy obsession with John DeLorean, and you have the incredibly surreal Neon Neon, whose debut album Stainless Style is a concept work about the life of the notorious car-maker.

Digital was packed to the rafters for their appearance and they didn’t disappoint.

In a biographical show about DeLorean, the breadth of musical style on display was as unlikely as the concept.

They opened with songs in their trademark, throwback synth pop style. But polished tracks such as I Told Her On Alderaan, featuring the seductive voice of le Bon, every inch the sex symbol of a bygone era, were quickly counterpointed with grubby dancehall tracks such as Sweat Shop, featuring Har Mar Superstar.

The set culminated in an intense, pseudo-spiritual requiem song and really left nothing wanting.

Rhys’s tongue-in-cheek sign, prompting applause, held aloft over and over, proved very unnecessary by the end.
