An antique lamp post in a conservation area has been saved after a protest.
The old post in Church Hill, Patcham, Brighton, stopped working last week and residents were upset to see a modern post placed next to it.
Jim Woodard, who lives in the street, said: "Patcham is a conservation area and all of the lamp posts are the old swan neck ones.
"You don't suddenly plant a totally modern pole in probably the most sensitive part of the area."
A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: "The lamp post in question is one of the original gas columns and there were originally concerns that it would not be possible to safely repair it.
"However, steps are now being taken to ensure the heritage column can continue to be used."
