I travel all over the country with my job. Sometimes my mum, 90, when she knows where I am going, wants to come along.

When she knew I was coming to Brighton she jumped at the chance of coming along.

She had not been here since the Second World War.

We just have one problem: My mum is unable to walk for more than a few steps. I have to take her wheelchair with me.

This is no problem. The problems arise in finding a suitable hotel. I know from past experience that if you ring hotels about disabled facilities they all say than can cope with a wheelchair and there is a ground-floor suite available.

What they don’t tell you is that there are half a dozen steps up to the hotel. For this reason I always rely on the Disable Go website.

Can you imagine my horror when I found Brighton is not one of the listed cities?

When I contacted the website I was informed that Brighton and Hove City Council does not wish to use the site any more.

I cannot believe a city steeped in history does not use Disabled Go. Last month we were in Torquay and a small town like that is on the site.

Does the city council not want disabled or older people visiting? We made several telephone calls on Friday to get some help but they all had their answerphones on. In the end I telephoned Age Concern and got help.

We were staying at the Hilton Brighton Metropole and the concierge there told us the best places to visit where I could take the wheelchair.

I was disappointed in the council. I am only too aware of the credit crunch but to do away with such a useful website is beyond comprehension.
