Plane passengers faced delays after ice closed the runway at Gatwick.

About 100 inbound and outbound flights were affected after exceptional weather conditions overnight and a sudden fall in temperature on Wednesday closed the runway and taxi-way areas at Gatwick Airport for more than three hours.

The runway was shut at 6.50am for essential maintenance and de-icing work and flights were diverted to other airports including Heathrow and Stansted.

A BAA spokeswoman said Gatwick Airport apologised for any disruption to passengers' travel plans.

The runway was reopened at about 10.45am and passengers were told to contact their airline for the latest flight information.
