Councillor Geoffrey Theobald implied it would take time to restructure 121,000 homes for rubbish collection (Letters, November 12).

The restructure didn’t need to be carried out in the first place. The system worked well, as it had done for some time.

Since Coun Theobald’s letter was published I’ve been away on holiday. On my return I found out from my neighbour that a fortnight ago the rubbish collection was late and last week’s collection was taken on Monday, also late, but back to the day we originally had a collection, although five days late for the present collection time.

Anyway, we could not be bothered to put rubbish out this week. It would have been a waste of time as we had none due to the late collection.

But while visiting my mother in Bevendean Crescent, I was greeted by an unemptied bin – full. Where does Brighton and Hove City Council think my 75-year-old mother will place the rubbish, especially as the rubbish collectors won’t lift bags from the street, only from bins?

I’m going to suggest to my MP that there is a “vote of no confidence” to remove the managers from Cityclean.

To drive round Brighton, a place I was born in and have lived in all my life, and see the rubbish and poor state of street repair and maintenance is depressing and to negotiate endless bins and rubbish floating round the streets is pathetic.

If we as council taxpayers are late paying, we get warning letters. If we can’t or won’t pay, we are passed to debt collectors or taken to court but when the council’s service falls short of the minimum standards expected we all have to grin and bear it.

I urge the rest of Brighton to write to our MPs and demand action from the council to find a solution.

This situation is not the making of the binmen. It’s a failing of complacent management – something that needs addressing.
