The A29 was closed at Pulborough this morning after the River Arun burst its banks.
A section of the road near the junction with the A283 was shut by the police at 11.45am and diversions were set up.
A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “A section of the road has been affected by the river.
“The police have closed down that part of the A29 until high tide passes.”
The Environment Agency had issued a flood warning for the area and was continuing to monitor the River Arun. A spokeswoman said the risk of flooding was likely to decrease once high tide passed at about 1pm.
