Reaction has flooded in to the news that plans for the development of Brighton Marina have been scuppered.

On Friday it emerged there would be almost insurmountable problems for the developers bidding to build more than 1,300 flats on the western end of the site.

After a five-hour meeting, Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee decided to refuse the proposals, which it considered were an overdevelopment of the site, despite an endorsement from its officers.

For developers Laing O’Rourke, which had reportedly spent £10 million on its plans, the decision came as a bitter blow and the company vowed to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.

On The Argus website, opinion was divided.

Some, like Steve Fuller from Hove, supported the committee’s decision.

He said: “The developers should now go away and rethink what is good for the marina and the surrounding area.”

But Ben, from Brighton, said: “Most people in Brighton don’t even have a sea view, let alone a cliff view.

“Brighton seafront belongs to all Brighton and Hove inhabitants and the silent majority wanted these plans to go ahead.

“To reject a massive improvement and 800 jobs just because it will spoil the view for a few miserable nimbys is madness.

“Nothing gets done in the city and when we have people willing to invest and create jobs we just turn them down.”
