Residents are trying to silence a noisy nightclub that is disturbing their sleep.

People living near the Om Bar in Steine Street, Brighton, have had enough of loud music keeping them awake.

The club has a dance area on the first floor of the building which was built as part of a remodelling of the venue.

Residents in adjacent Dolphin Mews say the new dance floor has created noise problems and that they are being kept awake by heavy bass music.

In a letter to Brighton and Hove City Council signed by nine residents, they said: “Since these changes came into effect, and with close proximity to Dolphin Mews, local residents, particularly numbers three to seven Dolphin Mews, have experienced noise-related problems, caused by bass music.

“It should be noted that we do not want to see the club fail. However, we do not want to hear the club’s music.”

Residents also complain revellers congregate outside the premises and in the nearby car park and the front door is often left open.

They wrote to the council to oppose a licensing application for the new layout, which the club submitted retrospectively.

At today’s licensing panel meeting, councillors will decide whether Om Bar will be allowed to change its layout on its license.

Manager Byron Lewis told The Argus the club was taken over by new owners earlier this year who changed the layout of the venue.

He said the stairs at the back of the venue had been removed and a lobby built upstairs.

Mr Lewis said he was unsure if the dance floor was in a different place because he did not know where it had been previously.

He said: “They got the planning permission but it hasn’t been changed on the licence.

“Every time we have had an issue and sound complaint we have done more and more work.

“We have just finished having more sound proofing which is now 10in thick.

“We have had acoustic windows put in and a doorman makes sure the internal and external doors are closed.”
