A woman who stole £36 worth of dog treats for her pet told a court: "It was my dog's birthday."
Sophia Kafizas, 28, from Hastings, was charged with shoplifting after being stopped by security guards on March 5. She admitted stealing a lead, collar and dog food but said she had no money to pay for any gifts for her pet.
The court was told the defendant walked into a store, hid the goods under her jumper and walked out without paying. Magistrates gave Kafizas a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £20 costs.
