A stolen 4x4 was driven through the wall of a pub.

Police are investigating whether the crash near Burgess Hill was a ram raid or an accident.

Detectives said they are trying to get a clear picture of what went on in the area on Wednesday night after rumours spread that the crash was linked to a burglary in Hurstpierpoint.

A Mitsubishi Shogun, reported stolen from Manor Road, Burgess Hill on Wednesday, crashed through the wall of The Sportsman pub in Cuckfield Road, Goddards Green, shortly before 11.30pm that night.

Nothing is thought to have been taken from the pub.

Two hours earlier a house in Malthouse Lane, Hurstpierpoint, had been burgled.

A 28-year-old man was arrested and being questioned yesterday on suspicion of two burglaries and theft of a car after that crime.

Police later found a white Transit van containing the stolen goods in Temple Grove and seized a third car in Denham Road.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in those areas or before the ram raid itself is asked to call Detective Sergeant Mark Dennett-Thorpe of Mid Sussex CID on 0845 6070999 quoting serial 1823 of March 18 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
