Ms Paige’s current tour celebrates 40 years on the West End stage and she delighted her audience with a night that took a nostalgic look over her career, recreating many of her starring roles.
Broadway Baby was interlaced with anecdotes about her early days, and she discussed the shows that bombed, even joking about her lack of stature preventing her landing major roles.
However, her lack of height proved to be a blessing when she successfully auditioned for Evita, the role that ultimately launched her into stardom.
A powerful version of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina was followed by equally dramatic deliveries from Chess and Les Miserables. The lady may be small, but vocally, she is a veritable powerhouse.
For the selection from Sunset Boulevard, Paige appeared in her original costume. But the emotion she generated as Edith Piaf earned her the most tumultuous applause.
Although there was a lot to enjoy in her performance, there were times when her phrasing and stressing seemed a little bizarre to my ear.
But for an evening of looking back it was appropriate it ended with her signature number, Memory.
