If musicianship and a willingness to innovate were qualities which inspired commercial success, Pure Reason Revolution would be enjoying a much higher profile.

Reminiscent at times of a calmer System Of A Down or Muse, the band’s music switches genres and volumes with startling regularity.

Such is the wilful complexity of their music that the band took to the stage with a backing track in addition to a battalion of instruments, which included three synths, two bass guitars, two guitars and drums.

Synths were sampled and looped, the twin vocals created harmonies, and songs veered from gentle and dream-like indie to aggressive bass-led funk-rock.

It made for an impressive show, made more engaging by a projected animation backdrop.

Those in the crowd already familiar with the band gave a particularly warm reception to the lengthy Bright Ambassadors Of Morning, and those previously unfamiliar may well have been converted by the overall quality of the set.
