The regular live literary event this week welcomes actor-turned-crime writer Martyn Waites, who will be reading from and discussing his eighth novel, White Riot.
Published by Serpent’s Tail, it is the third to feature Martyn’s laconic Geordie private detective Joe Donovan and contains, as always, a lot of violence. A body is discovered in a rundown area of Newcastle, that of a Muslim student savagely beaten to death and then torched. Blame falls on the far-right National Unity Party but, for once, they appear to be innocent. The gore is not gratuitous – Martyn aims to show readers that violence has consequences beyond the provision of a murder for the hero to solve. “If you get hit, it hurts, and you shouldn’t shy away from that,” he explains.
He will be joined by Ben Graham, with music provided by former solo performers, Songs Of Our Lap.
