I totally agree with your correspondents about the irritation of loud music in pubs.

One cannot hold a conversation in such circumstances. But alas, it’s not only in pubs that one’s ears are assailed with unwanted music.

Many shops have it, even hospital and doctors’ waiting rooms have it. There seems to be no escape.

Most TV plays and documentaries have intrusive background music which sometimes makes it difficult to hear the dialogue.

Why do producers think we need it?
