I COULDN'T agree more with Adam Trimingham's desire to see Madeira Drive improved (Argus Comment, 18 March).

It has been disgracefully neglected by successive administrations of the City Council, and Greens have been calling since January 2008 for the radical vision and action needed to transform this grand old seafront promenade, and to unlock its potential as the premier outdoor space and historic jewel in the crown of the city’s seafront.

We were therefore delighted to see that precisely the sort of improvements we originally suggested look likely to be approved at the environment cabinet member meeting on March 26. The seafront and especially Madeira Drive is vital to our city’s tourist economy, and is too important to be used as a political football. We are pleased that the Conservative administration has taken on board the suggestions of Green councillors, and we look forward to supporting the great work that is planned for Madeira Drive.
