A radio personality will be part of a town’s St George's Day celebrations.

The guest of honour at Worthing's annual St George's charity luncheon at the Ardington Hotel, Steyne Gardens, on April 23, will be Mike Parry, of Talk Sport radio.

Each year the event, organised by Peter Kennard, of Tribe's funeral directors, and Derek Steel, of Jacob Steel estate agents, raises tens of thousands of pounds for Worthing charity Guild Care.

The event has once again sold out.

The patriotic festivities begin with a family fun day in Steyne Gardens, Worthing, on Sunday, April 19, at 2pm.

Attractions include stalls, a barbecue, bouncy castles, and a bird of prey display by the Sussex Downs Raptor Club.

Proceeds will go to Worthing Mayor Christine Brown's charities – the Stray Cats Youth Centre, Worthing Citizens Advice Bureau, and Worthing Scope.

There will also be a fancy dress sponsored walk, with an England theme, from Grand Avenue to Splash Point on the same day, starting at 12.30pm.

Christ Church, Grafton Road, is staging a St George's Day service at noon on April 23.

It will be graced by the Mayor, councillor Christine Brown, and the Mayor-elect, councillor Noel Atkins.

The service is being conducted by Canon Bob Aiton, with the Reverend Lionel Whatley, priest of the parish, in attendance.

The congregation will sing a series of rousing English “hymns”, including I Vow To Thee My Country and Jerusalem.

Dave Edwards, landlord of the Rose and Crown, has been granted permission to close off Montague Street, outside his pub, for an hour of patriotic festivities.

From 4.30pm to 5.30pm on the 23rd, he and other West End traders have laid on knights in shining armour, real horses, and party games, all under red, white and blue bunting.

At 7.30pm there will be a hog roast and barbecue.

On Saturday, April 25, St John the Divine Church, off Elm Grove, West Worthing, is holding a St George's Day dinner, starting at 7pm.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and £2.50 for children, with proceeds going to the clock restoration fund.
