With reference to the theft of lead from the roof of the British engineerium in Hove (The Argus, April 16).

There are two solutions. First, get rid of a Government that failed to be tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime. Second, paint the replacement lead with “anti-climb” paint.

This non-drying paint was originally developed to prevent cat burglars from shinning up drainpipes. However, it is brilliant in protecting lead roofs from theft. Even if thieves remove the lead without getting covered in sticky gunge, the lead becomes unusable to scrap dealers.
