It was eyes down, pens ready as a theatre company got into character at a pub quiz.

Members of the Broken Leg Theatre joined quiz regulars in preparation for their Brighton Festival Fringe debut.

The team raised a few eyebrows at The Crescent pub in Clifton Hill, Brighton, as they turned up in full costume to soak up the atmosphere ahead of their performances.

The Brighton-based theatre company will perform Eyes Down, Pens Ready at the Sanctuary Cafe in Brunswick Street East, Brighton on May 12 and 13.

The play is based in a northern pub on quiz night, where four friends' relationships as put to the test as they try to win a £500 cash prize.

The fringe performance follows sell-out shows at the Sanctuary Cafe and the Hackney Empire in London.

Anna Jefferson, writer and director of the play, said: "We have been told our characters are likeable and believable, so why keep them in the confines of the stage?

"Soaking up the charged atmosphere of the weekly pub quiz in my old local is the best way we can get in training for our Fringe nights.

"We strongly believe in encouraging people who do not normally go to the theatre to see the show - so hopefully some diehard quizgoers will hear about us and come along."

The performances begin at 8.30pm and tickets cost £6.50. To book call 01273 709709 or visit www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk.
