This double bill by Southwick Opera is linked by heartbreak and tragedy.

The first, by Puccini, is set in a convent where Sister Angelica has been sent by her family following the birth of a son, conceived outside of wedlock.

Helen Hardwick sings the title role with immense feeling and is extremely moving in the lament following news of his death which has tragic consequences.

Michele Restieux gives a chilling performance as the aristocratic Aunt who delivers the sad news.

Particularly outstanding is the young soprano, Jodie Spencer as Sister Genevieve, whose delivery has a marvellous clarity.

A more familiar piece is Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, a two-act opera telling the story of the heartbroken clown having to go on with the show.

Mark Lanahan, as the clown, combines a comic touch with powerful singing, both with the famous aria Vesti La Giubba and later in his rage before killing his wife, Nedda.

As the wife, Karen Orchin not only sings well but plays the part with great sensitivity, while William Revels makes a fine villain.

These and other principals are well served by splendid choruses in both operas.

Conductor Simon Gray is also responsible for the successful direction and staging of these two exciting pieces.
