A ram-raider smashed a car backwards through the doors of an entertainment store before snatching up handfuls of computer games.

The driver was captured on CCTV as he drove off the road and reversed carefully up to the entrance of the HMV store in the Montague Centre shopping precinct in Worthing.

He then crashed through the front doors of the shop, stopped and loaded the vehicle with computer games and consoles before making his getaway.

Sergeant Ian Kerr, of Sussex Police, said: “We believe a silver Peugeot 206 reversed into the doors of the premises, causing them to break.

“A male offender was seen to go into the shop and remove a quantity of property before driving off.

“A short time later a local male, in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of this crime.

“He fitted the description of a male seen by witnesses and on CCTV removed from the scene.

”When shop staff arrived at the shop yesterday morning they found the doors buckled, glass shattered and gaps in the shelves.

Police were able to trace the suspect from the CCTV but last night they had still not been able to track down the silver Peugeot.

The exact value of the stolen games and consoles is not yet known but it is thought the damage to the shop doorway will cost more than the value of the goods that were taken.

An HMV spokesman said: “Quite a bit of damage was done to the front entrance, which was probably the most expensive part.

“We are putting in temporary doors and hope to be back in business soon.

“There wasn't really much damage inside the store.

“We think mainly games-type items were taken.

”“Hopefully someone saw something and we would encourage them to go to the police.

”The Worthing man arrested on suspicion of burglary was still being interviewed by police last night.
