It's not often you get to watch a hero of the small screen play the tunes that inspire you on to the dance floor, but that’s exactly what the crowd at the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show got on Thursday night.

Best-known for playing Lister in cult comedy series Red Dwarf, Craig has shunned acting to boldly go into the deep space of the music scene.

In doing so he has swapped one cult series for another.

His Saturday night Radio 6 show mixes his own imitable blend of reggae, funk, Motown and soul with a palpable passion for the songs he plays, and commands a loyal following.

Craig’s tunes were the expected eclectic trip across the genres - the highlight for me including The Apples’ superb funk cover of Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name Of.

But the music was out-done in the diversity stakes by the crowd.

There are few club nights which attract such an assortment of people from all walks of life, all there for one purpose – to boogie.

The dancefloor of the opulently decked-out Spiegeltent was packed with a smorgasbord of smiling faces - a luxurious venue which proved the perfect place for a night of deck-based decadence.
