With reference to the article about MPs and their outside earnings (The Argus, May 7).

MPs appear to be a law unto themselves. Andrew Landsley said on Question Time that MPs needed to work for outside businesses to keep them in touch with the world outside Parliament.

How many MPs served on the City institutions that caused the huge banking crisis? Did they question what the banks were doing? How many MPs worked with children and questioned the huge numbers of deaths and neglect of children in Britain?

If our MPs worked with the homeless, the young, the unemployed, lone parents and with many of the most vulnerable people they really would be well informed about life outside Parliament.

As representatives of the people who elect them, MPs - like all other elected councillors – need to be open and transparent about their role. I also believe they should be truly representative of the population, with more women and carers in the House.
