A controversial plan to build on a flood plain has won support from a council despite public opposition.

Lewes District Council planners have recommended approval for a 7,040sqm industrial area on the plain at Malling Brooks.

The development would include 146 car parking spaces and a 70-space public car park off Brooks Road.

The council supports the development despite public opposition, including 37 letters of objection from the Lewes Flood Action group and Residents Against Inappropriate Development (Raid).

Many residents are concerned about the potential flood and traffic issues caused by the proposed industrial estate, particularly after the town was badly flooded in 2000.

Maureen Messer, vicechairman of Raid, said: “Once again the planners are not listening to people about the flooding.”

The council’s planning committee will make its decision on Wednesday.
