After reading correspondence (Letters, May 5) I’d like to explain the situation surrounding my resignation more fully.
When I became a councillor I also started as a consultant in the NHS.
I was part-time and the rest of my post was going to be filled by another doctor.
In hindsight I was optimistic about how long it would take to fill the position (it took nearly a year and the position is now vacant again). In the meantime I had to cover a full-time job, part-time, along with my new council post.
My health began to suffer. I limited my work in both posts as much as I felt able but my physical health declined and eventually I realised my judgement at work as a doctor was going to become affected.
Constituents must have effective representation by someone giving time and commitment. I was left having to choose between my roles. It was the hardest decision I’ve had to make but I chose my work as a doctor.
It’s taken about a year for my health to fully recover but I’m well and very pleased a fellow Green Party member was elected in my place.
I’d like to repeat my apologies to all concerned.
