Councillor Paul Steedman states that the Brighton Pavilion seat currently held by Labour’s David Lepper has always been a two-horse race between the Greens and the Tories (Letters, May 8).

He writes that the Labour team lacks experience, gusto and support from the electorate. I say it is Nancy Platts, the Labour prospective candidate, who currently holds a far higher profile on local issues than Caroline Lucas, MEP for the Greens, and the Tory candidate who’s name I have forgotten.

The Greens can throw as much money as they like at unseating Labour in Brighton Pavilion but at best all it will do is divide the vote and let the Tories in through the middle.

Coun Steedman says that Labour are dead in the water and another letter on the same page counts them as “morally bankrupt”, fashionable words from people who don’t like the Government.

Personally, I still remember three million unemployed, atrocious waiting lists for oper-ations, low investment in schools and quotes from Tories such as, “Only the poor get a bus” and, “There is no such thing as Society.”

I do not believe the Tories have anything new or better to offer, they are simply standing back hoping the media, who are obsessed with personalities and conflict, assass-inate the Government.

I think green issues are currently well handled by Labour and even the Tories pay lip service to this increasingly important area but does anyone know what the Green Party really stands for apart from environmental issues? The truth could hurt.

Labour may need to relearn how to sell themselves but to assume they are finished is naive and wrong.
