Politicians know the importance of name-checking as many towns and cities as they can to increase the media coverage of whatever speech they may be making.
So, when Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper mentioned Brighton in passing this morning she presumably believed it would help get her message, about the Government’s aim to help more than 750,000 people into work by the end of next year, into the local news.
Delivering her keynote address to Labour conference, she said: “Across the country, major employers have been signing up to the Backing Young Britain campaign. From Bradford to Brighton, Coatbridge to Cardiff, councils, housing associations, football clubs and countless community organisations are signing up to our £1bn fund to deliver over 100,000 youth jobs, as we guarantee no young person is stuck on the dole more than 12 months.”
If Yvette thinks she can get a mention in The Argus simply by making a passing mention of Brighton in an alliterative list of British towns she is clearly well advised.
