Cabinet minister John Denham insists not a single voter slammed their door in his face when he went canvassing with Hove MP Celia Barlow yesterday morning.

“Absolutely none,” he says, when asked how many constituents decided to register a door-based political protest.

The Communities and Local Government Secretary told The Argus: “The challenge was trying to find someone who was in to talk to. We had a film crew in tow so whether they saw the camera and didn’t come to the door we don’t know. But the people we saw were very positive.”

He added: “People are beginning to focus on the election, and while everyone’s got their list of things they wish were different, that’s not the same as asking ‘who am I going to vote for at the next general election?’.”

And Hove’s answer to this question, Mr Denham predicts, will be Labour.
