A couple have thanked a police officer who escorted them to hospital just in time for their baby to be born in the car park.

Lisa Sewell, 32, gave birth to a 5lb 8oz baby boy on the back seat of her husband's car outside St Richard's Hospital in Chichester just before 11am on Thursday.

Mrs Sewell's waters had broken on the way to the hospital and husband Matthew, 38, asked for PC Rowland Watmore's assistance.

Following PC Watmore's patrol car with its sirens and lights flashing, the couple just made it to the hospital grounds in time.

The baby, who has not yet been named, is Mrs Sewell's third.

He wasn't due to be born until January 10 but the couple, from Storrington, were forced into action when Lisa started having contractions.

Initially the couple, who have been married for two years, had hoped to go to Worthing Hospital but there were no available spaces and so the couple were forced to head to Chichester.
