The article on the move of Field’s Garage (The Argus, January 2) brought to my mind that there was a branch of the firm located in Providence Place beneath the club rooms of St Bartholomew’s Church, now occupied by Mobile Tyres.
This garage was run by Eric Field, who I remember well, brother to Leslie and Peggy. I recall it well because it was opposite St Bart’s School, which I attended in the 1950s and where my father was caretaker.
In his off-duty times he assisted Eric in motor repairs and I remember being taken by Mr Field Senior for a ride down to and along the seafront in his large car, which I believe may have been a Bentley. I recall the luxurious deep leather seats. The trip was a real treat in those days for a working class boy.
