Shock horror! The Brighton History Centre is to be closed! (The Argus, December 19). Brighton and Hove City councillors obviously have no interest in the history of this fascinating city.

The internet is useful but nothing compares to the information held in the books, maps and records held at the centre – and, of course, the guidance of the excellent and enthusiastic staff.

We may all know how a small fishing village grew into a modern city, but since the popularity of television programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are?, more and more people want to know how their family was affected by the changes and what part they played in the society of the day. The centre is also used by school children and students. Where will they go to do their research?

The council recently decided to spend £800,000 on refurbishing the Brighton Conference Centre, two years before it is due to be demolished (The Argus, Dec 4). Now, to save a paltry £62,000, we are to lose a very valuable asset. Why not hold fire on the refurbishment plans and keep the History Centre open until it can be transferred to the new Record Office to be built at Falmer?
