A confused pensioner caused road chaos after driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway - for three miles.

The 78-year-old took a wrong turn and ended up motoring towards oncoming traffic along the A27 between Shoreham and Hove.

Drivers were swerved to avoid the Renault Clio as the woman drove east down the westbound fast-lane.

The pensioner was only stopped after another driver, Phil Klein, jumped over the central barrier and stood in the road to flag the Renault down as it emerged from the Southwick Tunnel.

Dozens of drivers had flooded Sussex Police with calls alerting them to the frightening incident unfolding infront of them on Monday at 6.45pm.

Michelle Neville, 40, was confronted by the Renault heading for her as she drove home from work.

The mother-of-one, a communications officer, said: “It was a really close shave.

“I had just come out of the tunnel in the fast lane and suddenly there were these headlights facing me.

“I just saw her and only just had time to swing over to the other lane and luckily did not hit anything.

“I just kept on driving but could not believe that I had got away it. It was really scary.”

Sussex Police confirmed they had received calls from other motorists who had also narrowly missed the Renault.

They also confirmed that Mr Klein had stopped the Renault before traffic police arrived.
