Police investigating the disappearance of a soldier in Tenerife are treating the case as a “possible accident at sea”.

Matthew Jackson, 18, was on the Spanish island with his girlfriend Amy when he disappeared.

Worried Amy, also 18, informed staff at the Pearly Grey Ocean Club Hotel in Callao Salvaje, near the popular resort of Playa de las Americas.

His family jetted out to join the search but hoped he would arrive at his base, Elmpt Station in Germany on Monday, where he was due to continue his training to go to Afghanistan.

Matthew’s mother Lyn, from Bewbush, Crawley, has been told that Spanish Police are treating the disappearance as a possible accident at sea.

She is now anxiously waiting by the phone for news about her son.

Matthew’s sister Claire has set up a group on social networking site Facebook, which has attracted hundreds of members.
