Historians are trying to trace the location of a fabled medieval chapel.

It has long been believed that the structure might have stood in the vicinity of North Street and Upper High Street in Worthing.

Now Barrie Keech, of Worthing History Research Society, is trying to piece together clues stretching back more than 700 years.

Over the years tantalising relics of medieval Worthing have been unearthed in the area.

Most recently, pottery was discovered when foundations were dug for the new Lemo office block in North Street.

But there was nothing to suggest a religious connection.

The chapel was built when Broadwater was the dominant village and Worthing was a poor fishing and farming hamlet.

Mr Keech said: “Long ago Worthing had its own chapel separate from the church at Broadwater.

“The location of this ancient chapel remains a mystery. “
