A man who stole a satnav from a police car swore at a judge as he was jailed.

Judge Michael Lawson told Peter Marsh he had no choice but to jail him after giving him “every chance” to stay out out of trouble.

Lewes Crown Court was told that 31-year-old Marsh was sentenced to a community order last year with a requirement he attends a drug rehabilitation programme.

But he breached the order and was arrested again for further offences.

In June last year Marsh, who lives in a hostel in Oriental Place, Brighton, was caught breaking into an unmarked police car left in a car park in North Road.

He was filmed by a CCTV camera inside the car and was later arrested after police recognised him.

Last month he was jailed for 14 weeks for theft and breaching an antisocial behaviour order banning him from car parks.

The court was told he was released immediately because of time spent on remand and since then has been arrested twice more on suspicion of theft, assault and going equipped for burglary.

Judge Lawson sentenced Marsh to two-and-a-half years.
