A HOSPITAL accident and emergency department is back in business after incinerator problems forced it to close for 20 hours.

Managers at the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards shut the department at 8pm on Wednesday because of a “structural issue” with one of the chimneys at the incinerator in the industrial part of the hospital.

Patients were diverted to Eastbourne District General Hospital and other nearby hospitals until the department reopened at 4pm today following an inspection by a county surveyor.

Managers said the move was taken as a precautionary measure and no patients were put at risk.

Hospital director of strategy and performance, James Gibbons, said: “We have worked hard to ensure the disruption to patients was kept to a minimum and we apologise for the inconvenience the situation may have caused.”
