Ben Roberts is ready to take on Michel Kuipers in the battle to be Albion's No.1 goalkeeper.

Roberts, troubled by a back problem, came through his first full 90 minutes of the season in the 1-1 Combination draw at Luton yesterday.

Albion Reserves manager Dean White said: "Ben's more or less there now to attempt to become first choice again.

"He didn't have too much to do against Luton apart from dealing with a few crosses and making a good save. There was no recurrence of his back problem.

"It is another step for him after getting into the first team squad for the first time this season against Crewe last Saturday after returning from the injury by playing part of a Reserves friendly at Worthing last week.

"It has been a frustrating time for him but he has shown a good attitude throughout."

Defender Paul Watson came through his third 90 minutes since his return following a back operation.

White was non-committal about whether the defender would be considered for the first-team squad away to West Ham on Saturday.

He said: "Paul looked fine but we'll have to see about West Ham after what he has been through with the injury."

Striker Maheta Molango's hopes of being named a substitute for Upton Park were scuppered when he sustained a knee injury 15 minutes from time against Luton.

Goalscorer Albert Jarrett and striker Jake Robinson boosted their hopes of making the bench.

White said: "Albert took his goal well and Jake looked lively."

Albion players plan a benefit for John Piercy, who was forced to retire through illness this week.

Midfielder Charlie Oatway said: "We'll have a golf day when the weather gets a bit better, but I'd rather get something done sooner rather than later because John's got a mortgage to pay.

"We might also arrange a meal with a comedian and that sort of thing. With some help from the fans as well, I'm sure we can help John out."

Oatway revealed the players were shocked when Piercy admitted he would quit because of colitis.

He said: "I knew that John was struggling with everything but I didn't realise to what extent. I thought he was on the mend. It's a sad day for the boys."
