A research project is under way in West Sussex to discover how much tourism is worth to the local economy.
The survey, based on a similar scheme carried out in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, will look at levels of income, jobs and investment between 2002 and 2005.
County council tourism manager Alison Taylor said: "Everyone knows tourism plays a pivotal role in the economic well-being of West Sussex.
"This very detailed work will pinpoint more accurately than ever before its true value and allow for better planning in the future."
Figures for 2003 revealed tourism was worth £537 million to the economy of West Sussex and supported 9,961 jobs.
