Adam Trimingham recently referred to the bombing of the Grand on October 12, 1984.

On the previous evening at the Conservative Party conference ball in the Brighton Centre, I had had the honour, representing party agents in Sussex, of dancing with Margaret Thatcher. Little did we know what lay ahead.

Early next morning, while still in bed, I received a call from my mother-in-law in Southport asking if I was still all right after the bomb.

What bomb? The radio had apparently said it all. So it was down to the scene of the atrocity ASAP.

Thankfully, Margaret had survived and, with commendable fortitude, decided to continue with her final speech and closure of the conference.

As Adam says: "Party conferences and politics would never be the same again."

Happy retirement, Adam, we shall sorely miss you.
