Sussex Police will try to recruit gay men and women during this weekend's Pride festival.

Adrian Rutherford, head of Brighton and Hove police human resources, said: "One in five people are members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and we are aiming for our police workforce to reflect that.

"We will be encouraging people at Pride to join Sussex Police either as constables, community support officers or police staff."

Sussex officers and staff will be running a stand with the Gay Police Association (GPA) at Saturday's Pride in Preston Park, Brighton.

The GPA's flag will fly outside Brighton police station and Sussex Police officers and staff have been given permission to wear their uniforms at the event.

About 40 officers will take part in the parade including colleagues from Newcastle, London and Manchester.

Deputy Chief Constable Joe Edwards said: "Pride events are a non-political celebration.

"It is my hope officers and staff attending Pride in uniform will have a positive impact on the confidence the LGBT community has in Sussex Police."

Sergeant Mark Andrews, the LGBT community police officer for Brighton and Hove and general secretary of the GPA, said: "It demonstrates not only do officers police the LGBT community but they are also part of that community and are not ashamed to publicly show this."
