The Government is facing its biggest threat of industrial action over pensions amid growing concern people could be forced to work longer before retiring.

Local government workers voted at a conference yesterday to defend their pension scheme - with strikes if necessary.

The leader of the country's biggest trade union has written to the Chancellor opposing the "threat" to pension provision for public service workers.

Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, said plans to raise the minimum age for drawing a public sector pension from 50 to 55 and for increased employee contributions were being carried forward without proper debate.

Delegates at Unison's local government conference in Bournemouth voted to organise industrial action if necessary.
