House prices soared ahead by 4.5 per cent during April as growth was driven by properties at the bottom end of the market, Government figures showed yesterday.

The rise, almost double the strong 2.4 per cent recorded during the same month last year, pushed the average price of a house in the UK up to £168,600.

But the figures, which are not seasonally adjusted, follow a month in which the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister recorded price growth of just 0.2 per cent, down on the 1.4 per cent recorded by Nationwide and 2.2 per cent by Halifax.
