The academics of the University of Sussex and University of Brighton went over the top in suggesting our government should intervene regarding the carnage that is going on in the Gaza Strip (Letters, May 27).

I recall the criticism the Government received because of the intervention in the Iraqi war. I also remember that our service personnel were sent ill-equipped for the job in hand and that ten British Military policemen were massacred because they did not have the weapons to defend themselves.

After all, the Brits were trying to restore law and order amid the shambles of a country that had been ruled by a cruel dictator.

Twice Britain and her allies have had to sort out the troubles resulting from two wars in Europe. It is about time this country gave up the mediatorial role and became neutral.

I understand independence and neutrality have brought peace and prosperity to Switzerland.

The Swiss senior citizens are not taxed to the hilt, have a decent living pension and have not had their savings devalued, causing much embarrassment to the British pensioner.

I suggest the academics of the universities should seek help from the Israeli Embassy and from the United Nations in Brussels.
